Leg and Rail / Milling


The Leg and Rail are made from 8/4 Red Oak.

 Boards may be 4" to 8" wide. Students lay out how many rough dimensions of 2" x 2" x 24" legs one can get out of a board.
 5 legs per student are needed. 1 for a test piece.

Legs should be separated and identified on end grain so marks won't be lost during milling process.
 If table saw is used one must remember to joint one fave and one edge. 8/4 Oak is best ripped with a rip blade and riving knife of course.

Be sure to have 1 face and 1 edge jointed and square on each leg
 Mark the square corner on the end and have some sort of identification which will indicate right side up
 Blanks should be approximately under 2" at this point. Try to make them as square as possible if you can.

Blanks will be dimensioned to 1 3/4" x 1 3/4"
Once the jointed face is planed (removing about 1/16" at a time), turn the blank on its jointed edge and send it through again without adjusting the planer thickness.
If the wrong face is sent through, the blank will not be square.

Watch Rolly receive the blank and turn it on it's other jointed side before handing it to Yaser.



It's important to pass both jointed faces through before raising the planer table for the next pass.
That is why proper identification is needed on the ends. Any symbol will do as long as it makes sense to you :)

Once all four faces are clean, blanks can be flip flopped any which way as long as they go through once on a face and once on an edge.        STOP WHEN YOU REACH 1 3/4"
  
*remember your fifth leg is a test piece, perhaps it should go though first as you dial in the perfect
 1 3/4"


Rails are 4/4 Red Oak.

Rough Lumber does not need to be joined and planed before being cut on the The Band Saw
Yaser rips his board into more manageable widths before proceeding to the jointer.


According to the plan, Rails are to be 3 1/2" wide.
This 8" wide board will provide enough material for 2 rails along its width.
A proper layout ensures defects will be cut out later.
